Transforming your paper flowers into a business

paper to profits Apr 27, 2020

I first discovered my artistic side when I started creating paper flowers. It was a revelation to work with crepe paper! I found such joy, and my imagination and creativity grew by leaps and bounds.

You’re just as passionate about paper flowers, I’m sure. That’s why you’re here! And maybe, just like what happened to me, your hobby wants to grow into something bigger. You’re ready to take that leap to become a business.

When I started up my paper flower business, I already had an extensive business background, both from my various degrees in marketing, business, and finance, as well as experience running my catering company. Even then, the business world of paper flowers presented new and exciting challenges!

It would have been an immense help to sit down and talk with someone who had already been through those business growing pains. But you’re in luck! While I can’t chat in person over coffee with all of you, I have put...

How to Color Your Crepe Paper with Design Master

Have you seen this month’s amazing featured flower here at the Posey Box? The calla lilies are absolutely bursting with beautiful spring colors! To create the unique blends of color on each bloom, we used one of our favorite tools: Design Master. We’ve long been fans of the amazing line-up of colors these sprays provide and wanted to share why and how we use them.

Why Design Master?

If you’ve never used a spray to color paper flowers, you might be a little nervous. Paint on paper can be disastrous if done incorrectly, right? That’s why we love Design Master. It isn’t like the spray paint you’d find in the hardware store. They are made with a wide variety of surfaces in mind, including paper. Both the more transparent lines (like Just For Flowers or TintIT) and more pigmented lines (like ColorTool) build to opacity, meaning that the first layer is more transparent than opaque. This allows for the color of the paper to shine through and lets you...

Kate Alarcon of The Cobra Lily shares how she came up with the calla lily design and tips as you go through the Calla Lily's tutorial.

When Quynh told me that the flower for the April Posey Box would be a calla lily, I was so intrigued! Although they grew in my yard as a kid, I had never made a calla, and I thought the unique shape of the flower would be a fun challenge.

At first, I had the classic white calla with a yellow spike in mind—this was the variety my sisters and I used to pick—but after some research, I learned that this bloom comes in lots of other shapes and colors. I liked the idea of pairing a livelier color and pattern with the simple, elegant shape of the flower. By using two colors of spray paint and peach/yellow doublette, I was able to achieve a surprising amount of color variation. The large, single petal of the calla turns out to be the perfect canvas for a dramatic blend of pinks and corals.

The really tricky part was the shaping. If you sculpt doublette crepe just right, it gives you enough stretch to create the curved trumpet shape of the calla lily spathe. I...

Let’s Look at the Calla Lily In-Depth

If you’re like me, seeing those little green shoots in the dirt and feeling the sun on my face has kept my spirits high, even during this turbulent time. I hope if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere like me, you’ve been able to find joy from the blossoms and buds and birds.

Throughout the world, spring marks the end of winter and a return of warmth and growth, and it’s no wonder that it’s associated with rebirth and renewal! Everything seems to be springing to life (pun intended). While there are many popular flowers associated with spring, none has come to symbolize the idea of rebirth quite like the beautiful calla lily.

Calla lilies originated in the southern part of Africa, but their popularity has spread them far and wide. Take a walk at the right time of year, and you’ll probably spot some growing in your neighborhood. People all over the world love them and have included them in celebrations and stories. They are intertwined with our...

Welcome to the world of paper flower making!

The Posey Box challenge Kate Alarcon of The Cobra Lily to make a parrot tulip that was easy for beginners but advanced paper florists would be able to learn a new tip or two with this tutorial.

Here's Kate's message on how she came up with the March Posey Box's Parrot Tulip Tutorial.

"My first design challenge for The Posey Box was the black parrot tulip. I was already nervous following in the footsteps of Inga Peterson and her beautiful tutorials, and then I found out that my first project was going to be a flower I had never made before!

I love tulips in general, and French tulips in particular. I always assumed someday I would take on this beautiful flower with its fringy, saw-toothed petal edges—but to be honest, we are so spoiled with gorgeous tulips in my area, that I left it on the back burner. So I was happy to be pushed to finally make one! Quynh told me I could pick whichever color tulip I wanted.  I dove into Pinterest to see what was out there. I was...
